We’re going to let you in on a secret.
A secret to success.
A kingdom secret.
First things first. No kidding around. No sarcasm. No exaggeration. Harold and I started off our marriage and family handicapped and destined for failure. We both came from broken families. We both grew up in rough neighborhoods and we had experienced trauma and abuse during childhood that had left us scarred. When our first child arrived we were clueless and wounded.
Fast forward 22 years and 8 children later.
We have had many people ask us, “How do you do it?” They look at our family and see very good results. Results they would like to have in their own families. Now, you have to know that this confounded Harold and I. We know our own faults and failures all too well, not to mention those of our children. It’s not a perfection that we claim, but a perfecter. Jesus is the author and perfecter of our faith and He changes everything. He can take the roughest two idiots like Harold and I, and by His grace and power at work in us, do beautiful and amazing things.
Here are the two greatest things Jesus has done in our home:
1-Given us love for Him.
2-Given us love for each other.
We have been amazed and ever so grateful to see how God has given us hearts full of love for Him. Then, as a natural result, we have experienced good relationships with each other. When 10 people can share 2 bathrooms and still like each other you know that God’s miraculous power is at work!
For the past year or two Harold and I have been discussing and asking the Lord, “Why are two knuckle heads like us seeing such good results in our family? And, “How can other families get the same results?” We feel like God revealed the secret to us and hence this blog. We are so excited to share with you the secret to our success. It’s a kingdom secret! And it’s yours for the taking!
Luke 8:15 says, “But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.”
1-Only in Christ will you bear fruit for the kingdom. (…those with a noble and good heart..”)
The first secret to success is knowing Christ. Not just knowing of Him, but actually having entered into an eternal covenant with Him where you have exchanged all you are for all He is. No one has a noble and good heart except Christ alone. When we enter into a personal relationship with God through Christ Jesus, His son, we are given His good and noble heart.
2-You have to listen to God. (…who hear the word…)
One thing is clear in God’s word from Genesis to Revelation-God speaks to His people. If we want good results and good spiritual fruit in our lives and the lives of our children, we have to learn to hear the word of God. Henry Blackaby said, “If I do not know when God is speaking, I am in trouble at the heart of my Christian life.” Discerning the voice of God and hearing His word spoken to us is a learning experience and one we must actively and continually take part in. If we want success in our homes, we have to know when God is speaking to us and listen.
3-Hold Fast to God’s Word (…retain it…)
Notice these definitions of retain: keep possession of, hang on to, not abolish, discard, or alter, keep in one’s memory. If we want to see an amazing crop of good fruit in our lives, we have to go beyond just hearing God’s word. We will have to retain it. That means we’re going to have to keep possession of it (Ps.119:105) and hang onto it for dear life! When we hear God’s word spoken to us we have to bring it into the core of our being and then live our lives based upon its truth. (James 1:22-25, Luke 6:46-49)
4-Never, Ever Give Up! (…and by persevering produce a crop.)
This part of the kingdom secret to success is huge! Don’t miss this! Once you establish a relationship with Jesus, hear His word and hold onto it, you are in position to see a miraculous kingdom crop in your life and in your family. However, there will be a tremendous amount of hard work required to walk in obedience to God’s commands for our lives. The devil does not want to see us succeed and bear fruit. He can use many different types of weapons to keep us from persevering in that which God has called us to. Some of his favorites are: fear, doubt, anger, unforgiveness, discouragement, weariness, uncertainty, sinful strongholds, addictions, despair. They will all be aimed at making us quit and give up. If we give up on walking in obedience to God’s commands and the word He has spoken to us, then we will forfeit the good crop that was coming our way.
Each of us has a daily choice to make.
If we will walk with God, hear His voice, hold fast to His word and then persevere in that which He has called us to do, then we will see good fruit in our lives.
It doesn’t matter how many times we’ve made bad choices in the past or how bad the circumstances are in our homes because of those choices. Today we can each choose to start moving forward with Jesus as He transforms our family into one that loves Him and each other.
This blog will be dedicated to helping families see great results in their homes. We will share practical examples of how we have hashed out Luke 8:15 in our lives. We’ll let you laugh at our mistakes and grab a hold of our successes and make them your own. We want to come alongside our brothers and sisters in Christ and coach you and cheer you on as you position yourself for a kingdom crop in your home that will be beyond your imagining!
