“My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.” -Psalm 130:6
How’s your watch going?
Caroline and I have found that when we get past the “why” in our struggles, we slam straight into the “how long?” How long am I going to have to deal with this? How long will it take before my prayers are answered? How long before I see God move on my behalf?
Lazarus waited 4 days for Jesus to show up and bring him healing.
Daniel waited 21 days for an answer to his prayer.
David waited 20 years to be made king.
Zechariah and Elizabeth waited about 30 years for the child they prayed for.
Noah waited 100 years for the rain and flood waters.
The Israelites waited 430 years to be delivered from Egypt.
All of creation has been waiting about 6,000 years for the restoration of all things.
God alone knows when the time is right for a prayer to be answered or a burden to be lifted. He alone is able to work out all things in accordance with His will and our good. The infinite One, who we put our trust in, is not bound by time. He is patient. We can be too.
Psalm 130:6 talks about waiting for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning.
Tucked into this verse is an amazing tenderness from our Heavenly Father towards us. If you have ever watched over a sick child all night, pulled a long night shift at work, or actually have been on a real night watch you will know how grueling and agonizing waiting for the morning can be. God knows how hard waiting for Him can be. How kind that He would knit into His eternal word a recognition of the weariness and discouragement our hearts can feel when we are waiting and watching for Him to come to our aide.
Here’s the best part of this verse, though! The sun always rises! Watchmen know that although it may seem like morning will never come, it will come! The sun will rise and their long wait will be over.
Luke 1:78-79 says, “…the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.” Jesus is the rising sun that will come and break through the darkness to bring us light and salvation. We can wait with certainty knowing that, no matter how long it takes, our Savior is on his way. He will come! He will deliver us! He will heal us! He will restore us! He will move and work in our circumstances! We must be diligent to watch for Him.
Whatever you’re waiting for right now, God knows how brutal and challenging your night watch can be. He recognizes that you may feel weary and be wondering if morning will ever come in your circumstances. But no matter how dark your night may feel or seem:
We are not of those who shrink back! (Heb. 10:39)
We are not of those who grow weary! (Heb. 12:3)
We are more than conquerors in Christ! (Rom. 8:37)
We are being renewed daily! (2 Cor. 4:16)
We are mounting up on eagles wings! (Isa. 40:31)
We will be diligent on the watch! (Ps. 130:6)
Join Caroline and I today as we scream to the heavens and let it reverberate in our souls, “WE WILL WAIT! OUR SAVIOR IS COMING! WITH HEARTS FULL OF FAITH, JESUS WE WAIT FOR YOU!”
Lord, I pray for anyone who is reading this right now and is feeling like it’s just been too long. Dear Father, please strengthen the weary ones. Encourage their hearts to know that they are not alone and strengthen their faith so that they will remember that You are certainty. You are faithful. You will come to them. Their dark night will not last forever. You will come and with You will come light and rest and relief from the long, grueling night. Help us to be diligent on the watch. In Jesus name I pray.
