“…apart from me you can do nothing.” -John 15:5
Several years ago I found myself in a stressful season as a mom, caring for six children. I began to face incredibly difficult behavior problems with two of our children. One of our children would soon be diagnosed with autism. I was bogged down with doctor and therapy appointments, and to top it all off, I was losing a lot of sleep each night. I became overwhelmed trying to handle all these things. I no longer spent time with God daily like I had done before. I figured God would understand that I was tied up putting out fires and just didn’t have the time. I thought I could read a quick verse here or there and put on some praise music throughout the day and I’d be good. I was so wrong! I failed to realize that, in this busy and challenging season as a mom, I needed Jesus more than ever. I desperately needed His grace and presence.
There is really only one thing we need as parents. (Luke 10:41-42) We need time at the feet of Jesus, listening to His voice. I so often get this backwards. I think that I need to finish the dishes and have the house in order so that I can then sit down and spend time in God’s Word. When actually, the opposite is true – I need to sit and spend time in God’s Word so that His Spirit can enable me to go about my household duties filled with joy.
So many things rise up in our lives to deter us from being at our Savior’s feet and spending time hearing what He wants to say to us; but, we will always end up frazzled and stressed out if we give into the temptation to run around busy and never sit still and listen to our God.
John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” In John 15:5 Jesus said, “…apart from me you can do nothing.” One of the greatest things we can do as parents is spend time each day with Jesus by reading His Word. He is there. He is the Word! We need Him. We cannot love and raise our children without Him.
James 4:6-8 says, “‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you.” If our hearts are humble, we will recognize our need to draw near to God by spending time listening to Him, and when we do, He gives us grace and we get to experience Him coming near to us. Who do you think doesn’t want us spending time submitting ourselves to the voice and presence of our Savior? We must resist the devil and draw near to God in His Word. When we do, we will find God’s miraculous grace at work, equipping us to be the parents He has called us to be, and our homes to be the good soil that He will use to bring forth Kingdom crops.
Learn from my mistake and don’t let any season of parenting pull you away from daily spending time with Jesus. We desperately need Him!
Dear God, I desperately need you! Do not let me wander or stay from you. Keep me in your Word each and every day. Thank you that with you all things are possible. You will empower me to love when it’s not easy, to stand strong when I feel weak, and to continue to pour myself out for others when it seems I have nothing left to give. Please keep me at your feet, Lord Jesus!
